Canada and the global hockey community were left reeling by the tragedy that occurred in Saskatchewan on April 6, when 16 members of a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team were killed in a collision between their team bus and a tractor trailer.
The Humboldt Broncos hockey team was traveling to Nipawin, Saskatchewan, for a playoff game when the accident occurred, taking the lives of 16 players, front office members and team staff. 13 more members of the organization were injured.
The accident sparked a period of mourning throughout the hockey world, with tributes played in NHL arenas and a global "sticks out for Humboldt" movement spreading across social media.
In the days and weeks after the accident, the Saskatchewan community banded together to help get aid to the survivors and to the families of the victims.
When a local school approached IDenticard with an idea on how to help, throwing our support behind their plan was a no-brainer.
Raising funds to help those in need
Creighton Community School is a K-12 school in the town of Creighton, right near the border of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Like the rest of Saskatchewan, the Creighton community was hit hard by the April 6 tragedy.
And like the rest of Canada, they decided the best way to honor the victims was to try to help the Humboldt Broncos community.
"The tragic bus crash that took the lives of 16 beautiful souls and changed the course of life for 13 others had an impact on our entire community," said Connie Atkinson of Creighton Community School. "I wanted to organize a fundraiser that would allow us to show our continued support for the Humboldt Broncos hockey club."
Atkinson contacted IDenticard with an idea for the fundraiser: creating custom lanyards featuring the Humboldt Broncos logo and team colors, along with the name of each victim and the phrase "Humboldt Strong."
Once the IDenticard team learned about the fundraiser, the lanyards were designed and created for no charge, allowing Creighton Community School to make an even bigger donation to the Humboldt Broncos.
"When Creighton Community School approached us to purchase some custom lanyards to support the Humboldt Hockey Club, we immediately knew we wanted to help," said Kim Morrison, Sales Manager for IDenticard Canada. "The tragic accident had such a profound impact on each of us that it was nice to be able to support them in any way we could."
Creighton Community School has already started taking orders for the custom lanyards, and hopes that the Humboldt Broncos family feels the support from their Saskatchewan neighbors.
"A tragedy like this makes one realize the resiliency and strength of individuals, families, teams, and communities, which is why we chose the phrase 'HUMBOLDT STRONG' to be the message on the lanyards," said Atkinson. "We want Humboldt to know that we stand with them and will continue to support them, because at the end of the day, we are all Broncos."
